Map apps: £5+

Blow the budget with these feature-packed apps

Map apps: £5+

AA GB Road Atlas
Price: £5.49
Rating: ★★★
Offline Scale: 3 miles per inch
Contact: http://bit.ly/GB_Road_Atlas
As on the firm’s paper atlases, you get 3mpi scale, but can zoom in using your tablet’s Internet. This pulls up street mapping courtesy of Google, and you can choose satellite or road views, with detailed 16-yard-per-inch maps. But as it’s just an iPad-exclusive version of the AA Road Atlas app, we can’t recommend the GB Road Atlas over the cheaper iPhone download.

UK Map

Price: £7.99

Rating: ★★★
Offline Scale: 2 miles per inch
Contact: http://bit.ly/UK_Map

Most expensive by some way. You spend a long time downloading the 246MB UK Map, and get only two miles per inch scale. You can download specific areas (or tiles) within the app, for a close look (35 yards per inch) at maps you want to use offline. It’s quick to search, and loads faster than the AA iPad app. But you pay for the privilege, and the menus are cluttered.
