SEAT has attempted to inject some style into the cabin, and it certainly stands out: the chequered dash pattern has even been copied by Fiat. Some plastics are a little harsh, but the seats are the most supportive.

The lack of refinement of VW diesels is a big gripe of ours, and the 1.9 TDI is particularly noisy compared to the Kia. It also sounds coarse under acceleration, and there’s plenty of vibration.

Despite having the shortest wheelbase, the Leon provides reasonable space in the back, and the seats are comfortable, if firm. However, headroom is not as generous as in the Kia, and a large transmission tunnel makes three in the back
